Christian Scott: The Mets' Rising Star Pitcher - Injury, Comeback, and Future Prospects (2026)

The Mets' pitching pipeline is so deep, even a Tommy John surgery can't stop the flood! Remember Christian Scott? He was the first of the Mets' exciting young minor league pitchers to grace a Major League Baseball mound in the summer of 2024. What's truly remarkable about the Mets' farm system is that even after Scott underwent Tommy John surgery later that year and the team traded away three other top starting pitching prospects, they are still brimming with talented young arms. In fact, the depth is so incredible that even a healthy Scott might not make the Opening Day roster this year, and he might not even be the first pitcher called up from the minors this season.

This isn't a reflection on Scott himself. He entered 2024 as the Mets' #5 prospect, and while his MLB debut had its ups and downs, it showed promise. Injuries, as we know, can strike at the worst times and set back even the most talented athletes.

And that's precisely what happened with Scott. A product of the University of Florida, he was drafted by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. His professional journey was fairly quiet until the spring of 2023. That's when, pitching for Brooklyn, Scott transitioned to a starting role and, dare I say, began to truly shine. In just six starts for the Cyclones, he posted an impressive 2.28 ERA, striking out 27 batters in 23.2 innings while issuing only four walks.

His dominant performance earned him a promotion to Binghamton later that year, where he continued to rack up strikeouts. In 12 starts, he maintained a 2.47 ERA, boasting an 11.2 K/9 rate and allowing just eight walks over 62 innings. He kicked off the 2024 season in Syracuse, and in his first six starts, he looked sharp, fanning 36 batters and walking only six.

Much of Scott's success can be attributed to his potent fastball(s). As our own Steve Sypa described, Scott worked diligently on his four-seam fastball during the Arizona Fall League and over the winter of 2022. Its development seems to be a key reason for his stellar performance in 2023. This pitch typically sits in the mid-90s, often touching the high-90s, and its combination of velocity and rising action makes it incredibly difficult for hitters to square up. Complementing this is his two-seam fastball, a solid offering in its own right. Also in the mid-90s, this pitch features significant arm-side run and sink, making it another challenge for batters. While not primarily a swing-and-miss pitch, it excels at inducing weak contact, leading to fly balls that are often hit under the bat and ground balls that are hit over it.

Scott made his highly anticipated MLB debut on May 4th, pitching six and two-thirds innings against the Rays. This outing was his best of the season in terms of duration, runs allowed, and walks issued. His six strikeouts in that game were also his second-highest total for the season.

Despite a few quality starts, Scott didn't secure a win in his nine appearances for the team. However, a persistent issue across both Triple-A and the majors in 2024 was home runs. In a total of 18 starts across both levels, he surrendered 18 home runs. For perspective, he only walked 24 batters in that same span. Tragically, before he could fully address the issue of limiting fly balls, Scott was placed on the Injured List in July and subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the latter half of 2024 and the entirety of 2025.

But here's where it gets interesting... None of these setbacks diminish the hope the Mets have for Scott. This is also true despite the emergence of other promising pitchers like Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong. Our very own Lukas Vlahos captured Scott's significance perfectly in his 2024 season preview:

"As the first tangible development success of the Cohen era, Scott embodies the Mets’ pitching development pipeline. He's a product of the enhanced processes the team has implemented as they strive to catch up with the sport's powerhouses. Scott's success won't single-handedly usher in an era of pitching dominance akin to the Dodgers or Rays, but it would be a powerful indicator that the organization is heading in the right direction, signaling brighter days ahead."

Scott's fastball is a real weapon, consistently hitting 94 mph and touching 98 mph. It possesses exceptional "shape," a term used to describe its trajectory and movement, and Scott's elite command of this pitch arguably makes it the best fastball in the minor leagues. While he may lack the extensive track record or a truly standout secondary pitch to rival other elite prospects based on stuff alone, a conservative projection still places him as a near MLB-ready mid-rotation starter. If he can make another leap with one of his secondary pitches, he could easily become a legitimate #2 rotation option.

If Scott can return healthy and regain the control and fastball velocity he displayed in 2024, he will undoubtedly be a key part of the Mets' plans for 2026 and beyond. And if he can conquer the long ball, he'll be an even more significant piece of the puzzle. And this is the part most people miss... even if he doesn't, the current construction of the team and the robust state of the farm system mean it won't be a catastrophic outcome. This is a fantastic position for Scott to be in, free from excessive pressure, and an equally excellent situation for the club, allowing them to prioritize his full recovery without rushing him back.

What are your thoughts on Scott's potential? Do you believe he can overcome his injury and become a top-tier starter for the Mets? Or is the depth of the farm system a sign that even if he doesn't reach his peak, the team is in a strong position?
