In an exciting update for Marvel fans, Simu Liu, the star of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," has opened up about his character's return in the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday." He shared some intriguing insights into how Shang-Chi has progressed since audiences last saw him in 2021.
"Avengers: Doomsday" promises to shine a light on various characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), spanning its past, present, and possibly future. While some characters have been seen more recently, others, like Shang-Chi, have been absent from the spotlight for quite a while.
Since the release of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" in 2021, Liu's character has been somewhat on the sidelines. However, this new installment will provide him with the opportunity to take center stage again, likely as a member of Captain America's team of Avengers.
In a recent conversation with ComicBook.com, Liu was asked about his character's transformation over the years, especially considering that by December, it will have been more than five years since he last portrayed Shang-Chi. "Time has passed. He’s older now, and I think I’ve matured as well, so I’m excited to infuse my performance with a greater sense of self-confidence. Shang-Chi has always been a bit of an outsider, so I believe we’ll see him in a place where he feels more in tune with who he is and the responsibilities that come with it," Liu explained.
Liu was careful not to divulge too many details about the film, sharing his concerns about how his words might be interpreted in soundbites. "I often find myself caught off guard; I remember being freezing cold on the rooftop of the Empire State Building when someone asked about his costume, and I casually mentioned, 'Oh, it’s new.' That remark spiraled into a whirlwind of speculation," he recounted. "Now, I tend to hold back on what I say about it."
Despite having released four teaser trailers, the anticipation for "Avengers: Doomsday" continues to build. Fans are eager for any fresh information regarding the film, making every comment from the cast highly scrutinized. In fact, actor Alan Cumming, known for his role in "Nightcrawler," faced backlash from Marvel Studios merely for suggesting a potential showdown between his character and Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic.
Currently, there doesn't seem to be a strong push for a direct sequel to Shang-Chi, indicating that he may play a supporting role in future MCU narratives. The original film, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," achieved impressive box office success, earning $432 million globally—quite remarkable given the pandemic's impact on theater attendance at the time.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, "Avengers: Doomsday" features a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, who has previously collaborated with them on the "Avengers" and "Captain America" franchises. Michael Waldron, known for his work on "Loki" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," is also contributing to the script.
Mark your calendars! "Avengers: Doomsday" is set to hit theaters on December 18, while "Avengers: Secret Wars" is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
