Stormers' Positional Switch: World Cup Hero Willemse's New Role & Roos' Return for Sharks Rematch (2026)

Get ready for an exciting rugby showdown as the Stormers gear up for their rematch against the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship (URC)!

A Tale of Two Teams and a World Cup Winner's Switch

The Stormers, under the leadership of Director of Rugby John Dobson, are determined to bounce back from their previous defeat and secure an away victory. And they've got some big changes to their starting lineup to make it happen.

One of the most notable moves is the return of Springbok star Evan Roos, who will be taking over at number eight. But here's where it gets controversial... the double Rugby World Cup winner, Damian Willemse, is making a positional switch! He's moving from inside centre to full-back, a bold move that could shake up the team's strategy.

In other changes, Warrick Gelant makes way for Willemse at number 15, while Jonathan Roche steps in at inside centre. Dylan Maart replaces Suleiman Hartzenberg on the right wing, completing the backline alterations.

As for the forwards, Roos takes over from Marcel Theunissen at the base of the scrum, while Ruben van Heerden and Adré Smith return to the second-row, replacing JD Schickerling and Connor Evans. Oli Kebble also gets a start at loosehead prop, taking the place of Ntuthuko Mchunu.

Theunissen, Schickerling, Mchunu, JJ Kotze, and Zachary Porthern are the forward replacements, ready to bring their energy off the bench.

And this is the part most people miss... the impact of these changes could be huge! With key players returning from injury, the Stormers are aiming for a more convincing performance than their last outing.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the captain, will lead the team from fly-half, partnering with veteran Cobus Reinach at scrum-half. Wandisile Simelane and Leolin Zas complete the backline, adding their skills to the mix.

Dobson is confident that his team is highly motivated and ready to show their fans what it means to wear the Stormers jersey.

So, will the Stormers' changes pay off? Can they secure the victory and make their mark in this URC derby?

Find out as the teams take to the field at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, Durban, on Saturday, January 31st, with a 17:00 local kick-off.
